Robert Nanninga was a force of nature in the Encinitas community. Writer, poet, environmentalist, activist, actor, and a catalyst for all things creative, blessed with the true spirit of The Trickster. Vanessa Lemen was inspired by a poem by Bob called “Ode To The Tree People”, which he included in the last editorial he wrote for The Coast News from his hospital bed. The first line reads: “Who are the people who speak for the trees, giving them voice from root tip to leaves”…the last line reads:
“Make no mistake, I stand with the trees”.
He was buried under an oak tree. His spirit lives on in everything around us.

well, I hate you too.. so there! haha.. totally love your piece in this show. and yeah, I didn’t map this out, it just came out as I painted it. The tree was the first idea.. definitely wanted faces in there, and I had a few to start.. then it just started evolving and faces started popping out everywhere.. I’d just see them and paint them in as I was going along. Not sure about the perfection part, heh.. but thanks so much for the nice words. the tribute was the most important part to me, and I consulted with Bob a ton when I painted this.
